Biographies of ApexMD Founders

Wade Smith, M.D., Ph.D
Wade is currently Professor of Neurology, Director of the Neurological Intensive Care Unit and Director of the Neurovascular Service at the University of California, San Francisco Medical Center. He was the national- and then international- principle investigator for the MERCI and Multi MERCI stroke trials that led directly to FDA clearance of the first 4 medical devices approved for use in human stroke. He is nationally recognized medical educator and recipient of multiple UCSF teaching awards. He is a founding member of the UCSF Academy of Medical Educators. He serves on the editorial boards of the journal Neurocritical Care and the American Journal of Neuroradiology. Wade has published over 70 peer-reviewed scientific manuscripts and is author of the chapter on Stroke in Harrisons Principals of Medicine - the most widely read reference on stroke. He wrote the first and second generation UCSF medical school curriculum database platform that UCSF medical students currently use today. Wade has been named as one San Francisco Bay Area’s Best Doctors for several years running. He is a scientific advisor for Radiant Medical Systems (endovascular hypothermia), OrNim, Inc (transcranial oxymetry), and BrainsGate (sphenopalatine ganglion stimulator), and has advised multiple pharmaceutical companies including Renovis, Inc. Dr. Smith obtained his bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Washington in 1982. He received his M.D. and a Ph.D. in Neurophysiology from the University of Washington in 1989.

Janeen Smith, M.D.
Janeen is Board Certified in Internal Medicine. She has worked as a primary care physician and as an inpatient physician in the San Francisco Bay Area for 14 years. Prior to forming ApexMD, she worked as a hospitalist at Marin General Hospital where she provided care for hospitalized patients. Her background as an internal medicine doctor provides critical insight into which doctors treat particular medical conditions or perform particular medical procedures. She established the linking system matching specialties, subspecialties and areas of concentration to over 8,000 diseases and procedures that form the basis of the taxonomy driven search algorithm for ApexMD. Dr. Smith graduated from University of Southern California School of Medicine. She completed her residency at the University of California, San Francisco Medical Center in 1994. She obtained her M.B.A. from University of Colorado at Colorado Springs in 2002.
